Analog Photography I

This is a ‘hands on’ course for those interested in exploring the beauty of light in black and white film photography. It offers a place for experimentation, trial and error, learning and interacting in a small group. All in a friendly and enjoyable environment. The course includes photographic excursions in Fremantle followed by black and white laboratory practice (film & print development, enlargement and process).

 

The course aims to offer you a chance to experience your own creative process from the shot to the print and continue your work independently, with a possibility to becoming a member to our community darkroom.

An introduction to film photography and B&W darkroom

Course details & value

  • 5 days  - 20h course
  • Small groups (up to 5 students)
  • Materials included: 35mm B&W films, all developing chemicals and RC paper 8x10''
  • VALUE: AU 600 + GST 
Equipment necessary: Each student should have a manual film camera and a tripod.

Program

Day 1 (3h) - October 17th (Friday) at 5PM

- Introduction to the course;

- Introduction to manual film camera and exposure:

   - Aperture/shutter/iso;

   - Light meter, 

   - Dept of field; 

- Indoor photo session in 2 groups: still life and portraits;

Day 2 (5h) - October 18th (Saturday) at 8AM

- Photo tour in Fremantle: 

   - Exposure,

   - Depth of field,

   - Movement,

   - Focus; 

- Film developing (darkroom). Introduction to the darkroom:    

   - Equipment, wet area & dry area, workflow, rules;

 

- Using film tank, reels and developing;

Day 3 (4h) - October 24th (Friday) at 5PM

- How to enlarge a negative: 

   - Chemicals preparation;

   - Introduction to enlarging (easel, focus, time test);

   - Developing paper;

   - Contact sheet 18x 24; 

   - Enlarging negatives (time tests) 12 x 18;

- Watching the first pictures in group:

   - Exposing + framing, composition;

   - prints (time and contrast);

- Homework: individual photo essay during the week;

Day 4 (4h) - October 31st (Friday) at 5PM 

- Developing films from homework (2nd time);

- Introduction to Multigrade Contrast + burning and dodge             (while films are drying);

- Contact sheets + Enlarging negatives (3rd film);

Day 5 (4h) - November 7th (Friday)

- Enlarging more negatives;

- Course revision

   - Screening and analysis of students pictures;

1) If you have done the introductory course to B&W darkroom or​

2) If you are a film photography lover who doesn't have a darkroom to develop and enlarge your own photos and are tired of sending your films (and paying each time) to commercial labs...  the membership is for you!​;

YOU CAN JOIN OUR DARKROOM on regular basis as an individual or group (up to 5 people). The darkroom is available during business hours and sometimes on weekends too! You can join in 3 different ways, according to your needs:

Membership packages value

  • If you want to use a darkroom sporadicly, up to once a month, up to 5 hours, AU 50 each month;​

  • If you want to use the darkroom regularly up to twice a month, up to 10 hours in total, the cost is AU 90 each month;​

  • If you like to use the darkroom consistently, once a week, up to 20 hours a month, the cost is AU 170/month;

​We provide developer, stop bath and fixer for film and paper. You only must bring your own paper. 

Alternatively you can buy paper per unit at the darkroom as well as black and white film (from bulk roll).

- Paper 8x10'' (20x25cm) RC Multigrade 1 sheet        AU 2

- 35 mm B&W Ilford HP5 / Kodak Tri-x 24 exposes   AU 12

- 35 mm B&W Ilford HP5 / Kodak Tri-x 36 exposes   AU 15

 

Once you complete this course you can become a MEMBER and join our darkroom to develop your own works independently.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
